What’s Happening in KentonCounty’s Parks?
· Did You Know…Parks and recreation play vital roles in creating active and healthy communities! The benefits are endless! For example, community recreation services provide a refuge of safety for at-risk youth. Many parents are rightfully concerned with the dangers of unstructured “hanging-out” or unsupervised after-school activities. Community recreation programs at public park and recreation facilities provide children with a safe refuge and a place to play, which are important in reducing at-risk behavior such as drug use and gang involvement. Recreation programs led by trained leaders offer children healthy role models and give valuable life lessons to help steer youth to a future of promise and opportunity for success. Each week, we will use Did You Know… to create awareness of the direct contribution that these essential services play in shaping community health, preserving open spaces, and benefiting the economy!
· Here are sketches of upcoming programs, events, and activities with dates, times, and locations… including some of those with which we are in some way affiliated, or we feel may be right up your alley! Get details and more in-depth descriptions in the paragraphs below. Then, get out there! Invite someone along! Bring a friend! Enjoy!
· Recap ~ Haunted Halloween Trail and Great Pumpkin Races!Just a quick note of thanks to the 60 “Haunters” of Kenton County Parks & Recreation’s Haunted Halloween Trail at Middleton-MillsPark (on Mills Road between Taylor Mill and Independence) this past Friday night, and to the 700 “Victims”, who came out and braved the quarter mile of torch-lit and creepy Trail. It was a SCREAM! From a number of “Victims”, this was the BEST One Night of Fright yet! On Saturday, there were 38 racers in the Great Pumpkin Races and 75 in the racer’s support crew pits. LOTS of silly fun and frivolity! We collected 331 non-perishable food and personal care items for Senior Services of Northern Kentucky. Special thanks to Jude’s Custom Exhaust Auto Repair, and Towing, to A-1 Enterprise ~ Signs, Designs, Apparel & More, and to Dominach’s Taekwondo Academy for their help in presenting the events, and to Snappy Tomato Pizza for feeding our exhausted “haunters” after the event. See ya’ll next year!

· October 28 ~ Why Trees Matter for RainGardens! A special Landscape Storm Water Management Presentation by CAPGIN at Cincinnati Zoo!Jim Chatfield of OSU Extension's Why Trees Matter Signature Program will be speaking at the next Cincinnati Area Professional Green Infrastructure Network (CAPGIN) meeting on Wednesday, October 28 from 3:00 ~ 5:00 pm. His topic will be "Why Trees Matter for RainGardens." This is a special Landscape Storm Water Management presentation targeted to: Landscapers, Growers, Developers & Builders, Storm Water Management Professionals, Municipalities and Public Officials. All are invited and encouraged to attend.
Trees are important components of rain gardens due to their high potential for storm water remediation. From http://www.treebenefits.com: “Urban storm water runoff, or non-point source pollution, washes chemicals (oil, gasoline, salts, etc.) and litter from surfaces such as roadways and parking lots into streams, wetlands, rivers and oceans. The more impervious the surface (e.g., concrete, asphalt, rooftops), the more quickly pollutants are washed into our community waterways. Drinking water, aquatic life and the health of our entire ecosystem can be adversely affected by this process. Trees act as mini-reservoirs, controlling runoff at the source. Trees reduce runoff by intercepting and holding rain on leaves, branches and bark, by increasing infiltration and storage of rainwater through the tree's root system, and reduce soil erosion by slowing rainfall before it strikes the soil."
The meeting will be in the HaroldC.SchottEducationCenter at the Zoo. Enter the Zoo at the Erkenbrecker Ave. gate between Vine St. and Drury Ave. There will be no charge for parking or Zoo admission.
CAPGIN is sponsored by Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC), OSU Extension ~ HamiltonCounty, Hamilton County Storm Water District, Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. NOTE: CAPGIN normally meets from 3:00 ~ 5:00 pm the last Wednesday of each month at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
